Manufacturing Facility Assembly Line Modifications
Earth Retention Structure & Underpinning Foundation Support
Structured Design and Consulting was awarded a design-build contract to assist a Central Ohio manufacturing facility to convert an assembly line to accommodate new product production. Our responsibilities included designing the earth retention system and underpinning required for the transformation.
To support the new manufacturing pit, our permanent pit design incorporated a soldier pile system with hardwood lagging for a 12’ deep earth retention pit. One section reached up to 20 feet for the lowered tunnel beneath the pit. The system was supported at the top of the soldier pile with temporary walers, struts, and tie-back anchors for structural support.
Additionally, to reroute column loads safely away from the new pit, the contractor had to significantly lower the existing column foundations. Our underpinning system, designed to handle column loads up to 400 kips, featured a custom welded connection, that supported and still maintained the structural integrity of the existing steel columns.
