Ohio Department of Transportation SR-4 Bridge Pier Replacement
Structured Design and Consulting played a key role in the Ohio Department of Transportation's bridge pier replacement project on the SR-4 Bridge over the Great Miami River near Middletown, OH. Working in collaboration with two contractors, we delivered an innovative design-build solution that allowed for the temporary jacking of two bridge spans, enabling the removal and replacement of the pier.
Our team together with the contractors developed and successfully implemented a temporary system that facilitated the beam jacking of the spans, while also accommodating the formwork and withstanding the concrete pour pressures during the pier's construction. This ensured a smooth and safe process throughout.
In addition to our engineering expertise, we helped reduce project costs by designing a system that utilized existing materials from both contractors’ inventories. Our custom falsework and jacking system were engineered as a truss to minimize deflection and maintain precise deck pour grades, meeting ODOT's strict tolerance requirements.
